Hana's Homemade Facial Scrub Recipes!

One of the key elements to having radiant, younger looking skin is to get rid of dry, old, dead skin cells. So what's the best way to do that? By exfoliating of course! I've ditched the expensive store brand facial scrubs and became obsessed with concocting my own. DIY scrubs are ridiculously easy and more importantly, inexpensive to make. There are a TON of different ways to make a scrub, which can seem a bit daunting. However, most of the scrubs I use often contain few ingredients and are usually found stored in my kitchen cabinets and refrigerator.

WHY WE NEED TO EXFOLIATE

New skin cells are created in the skin's inner layer (dermis). As they form, the old, dead skin cells are "pushed" to the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). These dead cells gradually flake off, but some of them hang on for too long, making your complexion look dull & rough in addition to clogging your pores causing blemishes (yuck) and acne (boooooo, hiss-hiss)! Exfoliating is the cure to removing these dead cells!

A FEW OF MY FAVORITE SCRUBS

COCONUT OIL & SUGAR SCRUB

1-2 Tbsp coconut oil
3 Tbsp sugar (I prefer organic brown sugar in the raw, but any kind of granular sugar will do)

Mix the two ingredients in a bowl using a spoon or your fingers. Slightly warming the coconut oil in the microwave helps if it's semi-hard. Using your fingertips, gently massage the mixture all over your face. Be extra gentle and careful around your eyes. Massage for 2-5 minutes total, and wipe the mixture away using a warm, wet wash cloth removing the excess oil and sugar. Voila! You're done! (*works for face & body)

BAKING SODA HONEY MASK & SCRUB

1 tsp raw organic honey
1/2 tsp baking soda

Start with a clean, dry face. Put the honey and baking soda in your palm and rub your palms together for a few seconds to warm up the honey and work in the baking soda. Gently apply the mixture to your face and massage it in for about 1-2 minutes. To use as a mask, leave the mixture on for 5-10 minutes. Rinse your face a few times with warm water (then cold water) or wipe it off gently with a warm wash cloth. Since baking soda is alkaline, using a toner afterwards will help restore your skins PH level.

LEMON & SUGAR FACIAL SCRUB

1/2 fresh lemon
1/2 cup granular sugar
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp of raw organic honey

Combine lemon juice and olive oil into a bowl until mixed together completely. Next, add the honey and whisk it until all of the ingredients bind together into a medium-thick consistency. Finally, combine your sugar to the mixture. This scrub is excellent for those who have acne-prone skin and for those who suffer from breakouts. Apply the mixture to a clean face in gentle, circular motions. Be cautious of using on open wounds, as lemon has the tendency to sting (ouch)! Leave on for 7-10 minutes and rinse with cool water and pat your face dry.

As a body scrub: Apply to the body paying close attention to elbows, knees, feet, and hands (especially your cuticles and nails) and rub in circular motions for 3-5 minutes. Rinse and enjoy your new, silky, soft skin.

SENSITIVE SKIN FACIAL SCRUB

1/2 cup granular sugar
1 Tbsp avocado oil
1 S-M organic cucumber

This is a really simple scrub to make and perfect for those with sensitive skin. Mix the sugar and oil together in a bowl. Blend the cucumber and add it to the mixture. Rub it gently in circular motions all over your face, then allow it to sit for 5-7 minutes. Rinse with warm then cool water and pat dry. Super simple, isn't it?

OATMEAL & HONEY SCRUB

1 Tbsp of raw organic honey
2 Tbsp of organic oatmeal

Oatmeal is also a very gentle exfoliant so it's perfect for sensitive skin as well. It's an all natural anti-flammatory and is super moisturizing. Blend the oats in a blender or food processor until finely ground. Mix the honey and oatmeal together in a bowl. Allow the paste to become soft by letting it sit in the bowl for 5-10 minutes; then, gently exfoliate your face massaging it for 1-2 minutes. Rinse with warm, then cold water and pat your face dry. This amazing, nourishing facial treatment will not only exfoliate, but will also soften and moisturize your skin adding a beautiful glow.

Using all-natural skin care ingredients are a lot safer and less expensive than buying expensive facial scrubs with harsh chemicals and fancy packaging. Moreover, these scrubs actually work! My Top 5 Under $10: Must Have Beauty Products for the Summer!

As a professional makeup artist I've tried TONS of makeup products out there in "beautyland". From the higher end of the spectrum like Dior and Chanel; to the lower end with products like NYX and Wet-N-Wild. It can be a daunting and rather expensive task trying to decipher which products give you more bang for your buck, and which products you should never buy. Like EVER! I'll cover that topic in the future, but for now I've compiled a list of 5 beauty products under $10.00 that I just can't live without; and neither should you! (*Listed in no particular order of importance.)

1.) L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara

Truly an AWESOME product for the price! This mascara makes my eyes look amazing! My natural lashes have been mistaken for falsies and I give all of the credit to this phenonmenal product. Most of all it doesn't clump or flake and is fragrance-free which I love. It's non-irritating formula is safe for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes. Weighing in at only $5.39-$5.89 at www.walmart.com.

2.) L. A. Girls Cosmetics HD Pro Concealer

When I initially discovered these concealers I was sold! I couldn't believe how amazing and affordable they were. The product has a crease-free formula with superior coverage and blendability. 3.) Maybelline Dream Bronze BB Cream

What's a BB cream you ask? Well, it's lighter than a foundation but heavier than a tinted moisturizer (and also contains antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients) making it PERFECT for the hot summer months. It provides an instant sun-kissed, bronzy glow to your skin while simultaneously protecting it with a built-in SPF 25. It's extremely lightweight and is great for ALL skintypes. Give it a try for only $7.24-$7.44 in store or online at www.walmart.com.

4.) Neutrogena Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes

These wipes are a godsend! They do a great job at cleaning away dirt, oil, and makeup which are notorious for clogging pores causing acne and breakouts (arrrgh!). These pre-moistened wipes require no water at all and are oil-free, dermatologist and allergy tested. A 25-count is just $5.59 (with FREE shipping) on www.jet.com.

5.) NYX Butter Gloss

Hands down NYX is one of my FAVORITE product lines. The quality and affordability is second to none! This butter gloss is a staple in my makeup kit and purse. I'm simply in love with the buttery, non-sticky texture and it smells and tastes great too (not that I would know however)! It'll make your lips soft and supple.
